As I'm new to designing anything, I don't know much about design programs. What I'd like to know is: What program you think would be a good start for a beginner? Why do you think it's good for beginners?

A good starting program is GIMP! Has a good amount of tools and features to start out with. After that if you have a Mac, Pixelmator for sure! Don't go to Photoshop unless your very serious and your getting paid for design.

If you're on a Windows PC, Paint is a good program to start with. You can learn the basics like filling colors, cropping, rotating, adding text, etc. Once you know how to use small tools like those, I would recommend a program like GIMP. I currently use GIMP and Photoshop, but until you really get into graphic design I wouldn't recommend investing a program like Photoshop. GIMP will handle most of your needs for awhile.
